Fraud Alert: Phishing, SMShing, and Vishing

How do the hackers and fraudsters who are trying to steal identities and confidential information do this?

They may be leveraging several different attacks called Phishing, SMShing, and Vishing.

Phishing is fraudulent attempts initiated via email that appear to be from legitimate companies. These false emails ask for the recipient to click on a link to verify their account information. The link directs them to a false website and asks for their account number or other confidential information such as a PIN or password along with other personal information.

SMShing is a form of phishing that uses mobile phone text messages to attract users into visiting fraudulent websites, call a phone number or download malicious content via phone or web.

Vishing is the criminal practice of using social engineering and VOICE over IP (VoIP) to gain access to private personal and financial information for the purpose of financial reward.

No matter what the source – phone, e-mail, text message, or web – be wary of urgent appeals or outright demands that you provide personal or Tech Data account information. If you are unsure if a phone call, e-mail, text message, or website link is coming from Tech Data Corporation, you may contact us to confirm that the request or the information is legitimate.

If you think you might have received a fraudulent request and provided information please contact Tech Data’s Loss Prevention & Security Department IMMEDIATELY at (800) 237-8931, Ext. 72652.
